Sweden has a multi-party system with numerous political parties, in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments.
However, the party’s gains fell short of the expectations of many analysts. Parties in both the center-right and center-left blocs refused to form a coalition government with the Sweden Democrats (SD). The Sweden Democrats (SD; Sverigedemokraterna) was the third-largest party in the Riksdag with 49 seats. In the 2014 general election the party increased its number of seats by 29, becoming the third-largest party. Its leader was Jimmie Åkesson, who was the longest-serving party leader.

Published 04 July 2019. The Government has decided to appoint a cross-party commission of inquiry to examine Sweden’s future migration policy. The inquiry is to consider the design of the policy with the aim of establishing a system that is sustainable in the long-term. The Liberal party is not part of the government, but supports the ruling minority coalition’s budgets.
